Changing Your Address

South Carolina makes a name and/or address change for your driver's license an easy two-step process but you must do it quickly. The state requires you to register a name or address change within 10 days.

Name changes can only be done in person at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), but you can change your address either in person, online through the state's DMV Public Services Web site, or by mail.

Note that all online forms are available using the free Adobe Reader.

In Person

When changing your name and/or address in person, take the completed Form 4057 to the DMV along with documentation of the change such as a marriage certificate or divorce decree.

The fee to obtain a duplicate license that reflects the name and/or address change is $10.

Online

Changing your address and getting a new driver's license reflecting that change are two separate transactions when done online. You'll need to visit the Public Services link above to change your address, then apply for a duplicate driver's license. There is no charge for the address change, but you will be charged a $10 duplicate license fee.

If your license is close to expiration, you can just renew with the new address for a fee of $12.50 and no additional charges will occur for the change.

By Mail

You can also make address changes by mail. You'll need to complete a Form 4057 and send it, along with the required documentation and appropriate fees, to the following address:

Remember

When you submit a name or address change to the state, it will automatically be changed for the following documents, but you will not receive new paperwork reflecting the change until you fill out the required forms for each, and pay the necessary fees. You'll need to submit a Form 4057 for any of the documents below, so make a copy and provide it for each transaction.

• Driver's License. You'll also need to complete Form 447 and submit a $10 fee.

• Beginner's Permit. You'll also need to complete Form 447 and submit a $2.50 fee.

• Identification Card. You'll also need to complete Form 447 and submit a $5 fee.

• Vehicle Registration. No additional forms or fees must be submitted.

• Vehicle Title. You'll need Form 400, your old title with your old name and address, and a $15 fee to complete the change on your title.
