Who is Eligible?

Any South Carolina resident age five or older can apply for a state identification card. All ID cards are valid for five years.

You will need to apply for your first ID card in person at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. Take the completed Form 447 (available with the free Adobe Reader), proper identification, and the $5 fee.

Required Documents

South Carolina offers an online checklist to help you determine which types of documentation you will need. Although the list is lengthy, you will basically need to provide proof of your identity, residency, and your Social Security number. You will need to take one or two documents from each section on the list, so round them up before going to the DMV.

Identification cards are handy for non-drivers, and for children ― especially in an emergency or crisis situation. You may want to consider having ID cards made for the entire family.

Renewals

You may renew your South Carolina ID card at your local DMV, by mail, or online. The cost to renew is $5.

If you choose to renew online, you'll need to have your ID card nearby and a MasterCard, Visa or Discover card to pay the renewal fee. If your address has changed since you got your last ID card, just visit South Carolina's Address Change Web site before applying for your renewal.

Replacing an ID Card

Visit any DMV office with photo identification and your Social Security card. Cost: $5.
